| The opportunity to design and paint the gigantic underground mural is "a dream come true" for Joseph Giannetti. Like the scientists working in the lab, Mr. Giannetti is interested in discovering and understanding the world that is beyond what we can see and touch. He spends considerable time drawing or painting an object, person or an abstract idea until he can feel its core meaning. He reworks images multiple times before he is satisfied he has reached the end of his search. This process not only allows him to explain to himself what he is sensing and experiencing, but it also allows him to communicate to other people, so that they can also understand what he believes is happening in the world. Mr. Giannetti has recently begun to use computer technology to document and save the changes he makes to his images, so he can better guide their evolution based on what he has previously created. Mr. Giannettis mural will contain elements symbolizing the formation and expansion of the Universe, the history of neutrinos and the scientists who have been involved in the search to understand them. The mural will also celebrate the Soudan Mine and the generations of Minnesota miners who provided iron ore as an essential ingredient of American industry. |
